The Modern Crisis

Western society finds itself in a paradox: never have we had more medical knowledge, more pharmaceutical interventions, or more access to food — and yet chronic disease is at an all-time high. The root cause is largely being missed.

We eat too often, too much, and too heavily weighted toward carbohydrates and processed foods. In doing so, insulin levels remain chronically elevated, and the body never gets the signal to rest, repair and regenerate. This process of cellular repair — known as autophagy — requires periods of not eating to be activated (study). Without it, cells accumulate damage.

Meanwhile, persistently high insulin leads to insulin resistance — a state in which the body's cells stop responding to insulin's signals effectively. Insulin acts on multiple tissues, each with different consequences: muscle cells lose the ability to absorb glucose efficiently; the liver continues producing glucose when it should not; fat cells struggle to regulate storage and fat burning; and appetite signals in the brain become disrupted. It is one hormone, but its dysfunction is felt across the entire system.

Insulin resistance is now understood to be the common root of the majority of chronic diseases afflicting Western populations, including:

The well-evidenced path to reversing insulin resistance is a very low carbohydrate diet combined with intermittent fasting — allowing insulin levels to fall and autophagy to resume (study). Drugs, by contrast, largely manage symptoms rather than address this underlying cause.

So if the solution is relatively straightforward, why is it not more widely adopted? The answer may lie in how we understand the relationship between the mind, the body, and nature itself.

A Deeper Framework: The Vedic Understanding

The ancient Vedic tradition of India offers a remarkably coherent and integrated view of life, health and consciousness — one that modern science is increasingly finding resonance with.

Ayurveda: The Science of Life

Ayurveda holds that all of creation — including the human mind and body — is composed of three fundamental qualities: Movement (Vata), Transformation (Pitta), and Structure (Kapha).

These three qualities manifest as five elements in the physical world:

Note that Water appears in both Pitta and Kapha — it possesses qualities of both transformation and structure, which is precisely why it bridges the two. These five elements are present in everything in creation to varying degrees: Winter is a Vata season, an Elephant is a Kapha animal, and the Liver is a Pitta organ.

In the human being, each person has a natural constitutional balance of these three doshas. When this balance is maintained, health follows. When it is disrupted — by diet, routine, stress or environment — disease begins.

Vata types tend to be thin, quick-minded, cold and light. Out of balance, they tend to overthink and become anxious.
Pitta types tend to be medium build, sharp, driven and organised. Out of balance, they tend to become overheated, and develop inflammation or ulcers.
Kapha types tend to be slower and heavier in build, patient and caring. Out of balance, they tend to lack motivation and become low in mood.

When you accurately complete a mind-body constitution questionnaire and recognise yourself in one of these types — right down to food preferences (Vata craving sweet, sour and salty; Pitta drawn to sweet, bitter and astringent foods like apples; Kapha preferring bitter, astringent and pungent or spicy foods) — it becomes difficult to dismiss. This is experiential confirmation of a system that has been applied to a lesser or greater degree, in different periods of time, over thousands of years.

Ayurveda then goes further, explaining how each constitutional type has its own vulnerabilities and how balance can be restored — not through drugs, but through diet, daily routine and an understanding of one's own nature.

Yoga: The Basis of Being

The Vedic texts also include Yoga — not merely as physical exercise, but as a complete understanding of life. At its core, Yoga teaches that all life is based on Being — a silent, unbounded field of awareness that underlies all thought and activity.

The Unified Field and Consciousness

This points to perhaps the most profound Vedic insight: that underlying all the laws of nature is a single unified field — intelligent, orderly and self-referential. Consider that if even one law of nature, such as gravity or the boiling point of water, were even 0.1% different, life as we know it could not exist. The extraordinary precision of natural law implies intelligence at its basis.

The Vedas describe this unified field as pure consciousness — without thought, without boundary.

Jyotish: The Science of Light

Jyotish — Vedic astrology — operates within this same understanding. One's natal chart, calculated from the exact time and place of birth, can illuminate characteristic qualities of a person with remarkable accuracy. The Dasha periods — cycles of planetary influence — can be identified and interpreted to show the leading qualities of specific periods of a person's life.

This works because, in the Vedic understanding, the planets and the Moon's nodes are not merely physical objects in space. They are expressions in material form of subtle energies and qualities that exist at a level prior to matter. There are two groups of these planets, and the groups are by nature benefic or malefic — reflecting the dynamic tensions we experience in life itself.

When a person looks back at their own life and finds that the qualities of each Dasha period genuinely match their lived experience, that is not superstition — it is experiential science. And if Jyotish, operating on these principles, demonstrably reflects reality, it lends serious credibility to the broader Vedic framework from which it comes — including Ayurveda, Yoga and the understanding of consciousness itself.

Bringing It Together

The thread connecting all of this is simple but profound: balance and intelligence are the natural state of life. Modern chronic disease is not an inevitable consequence of ageing — it is largely the result of disrupting the body's natural intelligence through chronic overfeeding, insulin excess and the suppression of the body's own repair mechanisms.

Ayurveda understood this thousands of years ago, framing it in terms of doshic balance rather than metabolic markers — but pointing to the same truth. Restoring that balance, through diet, fasting and routine, is not alternative medicine. It is a return to the root.

1. A Randomized Controlled Trial of Pharmacist-Led Therapeutic Carbohydrate and Energy Restriction in Type 2 Diabetes

A 12-week community-based randomized controlled trial compared a low-carbohydrate, energy-restricted diet delivered by pharmacists against usual care in people with type 2 diabetes. The low-carbohydrate group discontinued glucose-lowering medication entirely in 35.7% of cases, compared with 0% in the usual-care group. This is direct trial evidence that carbohydrate restriction can reverse the medication need driven by insulin resistance, not just manage its symptoms.

2. Association of Alzheimer's Disease and Insulin Resistance in King Abdulaziz Medical City, Jeddah

This retrospective cohort of 354 patient files examined the relationship between insulin resistance (measured by the triglyceride-glucose index) and Alzheimer's disease. After adjustment for age, patients with insulin resistance had a significantly higher likelihood of developing Alzheimer's disease. The association persisted after multivariate adjustment, supporting the idea that Alzheimer's has a metabolic, insulin-driven component.

3. Intermittent Fasting: A User-Friendly Method for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

This review summarises randomized trial evidence on intermittent fasting and carbohydrate restriction for type 2 diabetes, including a Chinese RCT comparing a low-carbohydrate diet with a low-fat diet. Both approaches significantly reduced HbA1c, with the low-carbohydrate group showing the larger improvement. The review notes that therapeutic fasting has, in case studies and trials, allowed some patients to discontinue insulin therapy entirely while maintaining glycaemic control.

4. Insulin Resistance and High Blood Pressure: Mechanistic Insight on the Role of the Kidney

This review synthesises clinical and experimental evidence that insulin resistance and the resulting hyperinsulinemia are causally involved in many forms of hypertension. The mechanism centres on insulin's direct action on the kidney: it promotes sodium and water retention along the nephron, leading to volume expansion and raised blood pressure, an effect preserved even in metabolically insulin-resistant states.

5. Role of Appetite Hormone Dysregulation in Symptomology and Executive Function in Adolescents With ADHD

This study measured fasting insulin and leptin in adolescents with ADHD, deliberately excluding those with obesity and adjusting for BMI and medication. Adolescents with ADHD still showed higher insulin and leptin concentrations than non-ADHD controls. The authors conclude that appetite-hormone and insulin dysregulation may play an independent role in ADHD, not simply a downstream effect of higher body weight.

6. Prevalence of Insulin Resistance in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) Patients Using HOMA-IR

A prospective controlled study of 271 women with PCOS and 260 healthy controls found that, after adjusting for age, race and BMI, 64.4% of PCOS patients were classified as insulin resistant using HOMA-IR, compared with the 5th–95th percentile range in controls. This remains one of the most cited studies establishing insulin resistance as a core, near-universal feature of PCOS rather than an incidental comorbidity.

7. The Relationship Between Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Metabolic Syndrome: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of 49,662 Individuals

Pooling data across nearly 50,000 individuals, this meta-analysis found IBS patients had more than double the risk of metabolic syndrome compared with non-IBS controls, with diarrhoea-predominant IBS carrying an even higher risk. A significant association with elevated HOMA-IR (a marker of insulin resistance) was also found, even though fasting glucose itself often appeared normal.

8. Insulin Resistance in Rheumatoid Arthritis: Disease-Related Indicators and Associations With Subclinical Atherosclerosis

Comparing 195 rheumatoid arthritis patients with 198 demographically matched controls, this study found HOMA-IR levels were 31% higher on average in the RA group. Higher insulin resistance in RA patients was also linked to greater measurable atherosclerosis, suggesting insulin resistance is both a marker of and a contributor to the cardiovascular burden seen in inflammatory arthritis.

9. Fasting Increases Human Skeletal Muscle Net Phenylalanine Release and This Is Associated With Decreased mTOR Signaling

In eight healthy men studied before and after a 72-hour fast, fasting reduced mTOR phosphorylation by roughly 50% and increased the autophagy marker LC3B-II by about 30%. This is direct human evidence — not just animal or cell-culture data — that extended fasting suppresses the mTOR pathway and activates autophagy, the mechanism the article describes as blocked by chronically high insulin.

10. Association Between MASLD and Insulin Resistance in Individuals With Normoglycemia

In 485 participants with normal fasting glucose, MASLD (fatty liver) prevalence rose steadily with insulin resistance tertile — from 34.1% in the lowest tertile to 47.8% in the highest — even though every participant's blood sugar looked "normal" by standard testing. This supports the article's point that insulin resistance can drive disease years before conventional blood tests detect a problem.
