The Mind-Body Types
Ayurveda, the traditional Indian system of medicine, describes three fundamental energies, called doshas that govern our physical and mental well-being: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Each dosha is associated with specific characteristics:
Vata (Ether & Air):
Physical: Light, thin build; tends to be tall or short with prominent joints and veins; dry skin, hair, and lips; cold hands and feet; quick movements; variable appetite and digestion; light and interrupted sleep.
Mental: Lively, enthusiastic, creative, and imaginative; quick to learn and forget; restless, prone to worry, anxiety, and fear; talkative; enjoys change and excitement.
Pitta (Fire & Water):
Physical: Medium build, muscular; warm body temperature; fair or reddish skin that may be prone to acne and rashes; sharp appetite and strong digestion; medium sleep duration; piercing eyes; confident gait.
Mental: Intelligent, focused, ambitious, and driven; strong willpower; can be irritable, impatient, and prone to anger; good leadership qualities; enjoys challenges and competition.
Kapha (Earth & Water):
Physical: Solid, heavy build; tends to gain weight easily; cool and clammy skin; thick, lustrous hair; slow and steady movements; moderate appetite and digestion; deep and sound sleep; large, expressive eyes; calm demeanour.
Mental: Calm, stable, patient, and grounded; loving, compassionate, and forgiving; can be slow to learn but has excellent long-term memory; may be prone to lethargy, possessiveness, and resistance to change.
Most people are a combination of two, e.g., Vata-Pitta, Pitta-Kapha, Vata-Kapha with one primary and your characteristics come from your predominant type. Very rarely, about one in 5,000, people are only one predominant type. dual-dosha constitution ).
Predominant Dosha Takes Precedence:
When determining an individual’s overall constitution and recommending lifestyle or dietary adjustments, the predominant dosha is the most significant factor. This is the dosha whose characteristics are most pronounced in the person’s physical and mental makeup. Understanding the predominant dosha helps in identifying tendencies towards certain imbalances and tailoring practices to promote overall health and well-being. For example, a person with a predominant Vata dosha might need to focus on grounding and warming practices, while someone with dominant Pitta might benefit from cooling and calming activities.
