Broths
There are three well-known writers, experts in the field, solely focused on chicken broth for small intestine repair. For our purposes, I am just going to provide some insights into the broader topic and relevant research on the role of bone broth in gut health. I will also provide you with some broth recipes, including for vegetarians although these will of course lack the nutrients only available in animal products.
Bone broth generally, and particularly chicken broth, has gained attention for its potential benefits in supporting gut health. It is a source of collagen, gelatine, and other nutrients that play a role in maintaining the integrity of the intestinal lining. Two of the research studies which have explored the effects of broths on intestinal permeability are:
A 2017 study in the journal “Nutrients” found that chicken bone broth supplementation improved intestinal barrier function in mice with induced colitis.
A 2019 study in the journal “Molecules” reviewed various bioactive peptides from food sources, including collagen from bone broth, and their potential roles in gut health.
The main benefits of bone broth for gut health may be attributed to the two components already mentioned.Collagen is a protein that provides structure to tissues, including the intestinal lining, and Gelatine, which is a specific form of collagen that helps soothe and protect the gut lining. Amino acids, such as glutamine, which play a role in maintaining intestinal barrier function are also a bone broth constituent. The two studies mentioned above, and the wealth of anecdotal evidence, demonstrate the utility of these broths. However, I should also highlight that it is important to note that bone broth is not a substitute for medical advice or treatment for any underlying health conditions.
