The book, “The Diabetes Code: Prevent and Reverse Type 2 Diabetes Naturally” by Dr. Jason Fung argues that Type 2 diabetes is not a chronic, irreversible disease but rather a manageable and reversible condition caused by excessive insulin. The book presents a new perspective that challenges conventional treatments.

Its central thesis is that Type 2 diabetes is an “overflow phenomenon” where cells are overfilled with glucose and fat due to chronically high insulin levels, primarily driven by a diet rich in refined carbohydrates and sugar. Fung contends that standard treatments like insulin injections can worsen the problem by further increasing insulin and leading to weight gain.

The book’s recommended solution is a dietary and lifestyle approach based on two main principles:

Lowering Insulin Levels: This is achieved by cutting out refined carbohydrates, sugar, and processed foods. The diet should be focused on whole, unprocessed foods with healthy fats.

Using Therapeutic Fasting: Fung introduces the concept of intermittent and extended fasting to allow insulin levels to drop significantly. This gives the body a chance to burn off the excess glucose and fat in cells, thus reversing the insulin resistance that is the root cause of the disease.

In this video, Dr Fung says “If you give drugs to a dietary disease, well, you’re never going to fix it because you haven’t identified the core problem and fixed it. You need to change the diet to fix that dietary problem, then the disease goes away.”
